Summer Dreams

I have been enjoying the spring weather here in central Oklahoma. It has been really cool (some may say down right cold) in the morning and comfortable in the afternoon. I wear a jacket to work and then in the afternoon I leave it in the car. In the morning, I go looking for my jacket and it is still in the car. One would think that one day I may actually remember and bring my jacket in after work but I never seem to remember.

With the nicer weather and a little spring cleaning, I start dreaming about decorating the house for summer. I have started adding beach décor here and there around the house and I am ready to start making a few things to add to my collection. Browsing through Pinterest, I have found some exciting projects that I would love to make.

DIY Star Wars Flower Planters

This week my youngest daughter, Mallorie, has been home and she is crafting. Mallorie is combining two of her favorite things: Star Wars and plants. I am not much of a Star Wars fan so she is helping me with identifying these characters.

Star Wars Flower PlanterMallorie used four-inch flower pots. She put a base coat on and then drew out the lines with a pencil. Then using the pencil lines, she started adding the little details on R2D2. She had to use a very small outlining brush for the small straight lines.

R2D2 Flower PlanterThe Stormtrooper also has a base coat of white and then she painted the black lines with a small detailing brush.

Stormtrooper Flower PotBoba Fett was much easier to paint with a green base coat. Then she taped off the stripes to paint the red and black.

Easter Bonnet Wreath

I am ready for spring! I love the colors of spring; pastels, blues, greens, and yellows. I enjoy the warmer weather and the longer days. Flowers are blooming and birds are chirping. It really is a great time of year.

Bonnet Wreath This weekend, I made a spring wreath to brighten up my front door. A lot of thought went into finding what I wanted to use for the wreath. I spent over an hour going through the craft store trying to come up with something that I wanted to put on the door. I have made a burlap wreath and mesh wreath before and I wanted something different. I just couldn’t come up with anything that excited me so I gave up and left the store empty-handed. My daughter said that we should go into Dollar Tree and even though I didn’t know what I would find, I went.

I hit the jackpot! As soon as we walked in the door at Dollar Tree, I saw some girls Easter bonnets and knew that I was going to use one to make a wreath. I also picked up some flowers to add to the bonnet. This turned into a very inexpensive project. And I was so excited to get home and make my wreath.

Bonnet Wreath SuppliesIn less than an hour, I had the wreath made and hung on the door. First, I added some ribbon to the hat. Then, I clipped the flower stems so that they would fit around the hat. I wrapped floral tape around the group of flowers to keep them all together. I used hot glue to attach the flowers to the brim of the hat. I made a bow with the same ribbon and attached it to the bottom of the flowers to cover up the floral tape.

Bonnet WreathI love the spring look of this hat! I even added in these cute little butterflies.

Quilt Sandwich

Quilting DayI have been working on my quilt sandwich. No, it’s not something you can eat. The quilt sandwich is the quilt top, batting, and backing pinned together to hold the quilt in place while sewing.

Not only am I using pins to hold the quilt sandwich together, but I also used fusible batting. This requires a large enough space to spread the quilt out flat. I laid out the backing with the wrong side up and ironed it out. After laying the batting on top of the backing, I placed the quilt top face up on the batting. I then ironed the quilt top to the batting. When ironing start in the middle of the quilt and work out to the edges.Ironing QuiltThe fusible batting is not a sure way to keep the quilt from slipping while sewing so I also pinned the quilt sandwich together.

Pinning QuiltNow, I am ready to quilt. I hope to get some quilting done this next week but it is spring break here and my girls will be here from college. I can’t wait to see them but that usually means I don’t get much done.

Faux Wood Sign

Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend and were able to enjoy some pretty spring weather. Today, I am sharing a faux wood sign with a quote that I love.

Several weeks ago, I bought this faux wood sign from Hobby-Lobby and when I saw it I knew what I wanted to do. I knew this would be a great opportunity for me to use the Silhouette.

Faux Wood SignI have been changed the decor in the house to a beach theme and I wanted to put some kind of beach quote on the sign. Searching through my collect quotes on Pinterest, I found the quote that I love and is perfect for the sign.

In High Tide or In Low Tide

I’ll Be By Your Side

I used my Silhouette to cut out the quote in black vinyl. For the words, I used the free font Birds Singing. Then I cut out the anchor in a red vinyl.

I transferred the anchor and then the quote over to the sign. And now, I have my own DIY sign with a great quote that goes with my home decor.
